The Two Premises of Sickness
Speaker: Jesus says you have to have two premises that are true in order to be sick. If you can just see that these two premises are impossible you can never be sick. What are these two premises? Well, the first premise is that minds can attack. The ego believes that mind can attack. In fact, it believes that the mind has attacked God. By usurping his ability, by pulling away from heaven the ego says not only can you attack but you have attacked and you continue to attack. So, minds can attack is a very deep basic premise of the ego. In the Course, Jesus says early on in the text that minds cannot attack. There’s nothing to attack with and there’s nothing to attack. Mind is whole and one and abstract. You have to have two: an attacker and an attackee. He’s saying the mind is whole, there’s nothing you can attack with and there’s nothing you can attack. The second premise is the ego says you’re a body. The Courses’ teaching is ‘I am not a body. I am free. I am still as God created me.’ Jesus repeats it twenty times from 201 to 220. There’s twenty times every day starts with, ‘I am not a body. I am free. I am still as God created me.’ And he ends the day with the same lesson and the same thing in between. So, the basic premise of the ego is that you are a body, minds can attack and you are a body. The guilt from the belief that minds can attack gets projected onto the body, and the ego says therefore you can be sick and you have been sick and you will be sick. Don’t kid yourself. Jesus is saying minds cannot attack. You can be deceived and you can believe that you can attack but in reality what does Christ attack? Participant: If there’s not another, how is attack possible? What do you attack? Speaker: Mind’ cannot attack and I am not a body
therefore I cannot be sick. If you want to see that laid out clearly,
Jesus says that in lesson 136, ‘Sickness is a defense against
the truth.’ At the very end of that lesson he says here you go,
here is your basic metaphysics that whenever you’re tempted to
feel guilty about anything that you ever seemed to do in your life,
you can come back to these basic metaphysics. Mind cannot attack and
I am not a body. So, I cannot be sick. You have to buy those first two
premises for sickness.
